Although it’s a tactical RPG on the surface, Expeditions: Rome also incorporates an interesting Legion battle mechanic to break up the individual skirmishes. These battles will see the player commanding entire units in a 2D tug of war influenced by player choice cards and actions. These battles can have harsh consequences if failed, so it is vital to succeed as much as possible. Players will need to upgrade their Legion Camps in order to maintain a strong force. Here’s what to prioritize in this regard.

In the Outpost Management menu, which can be accessed at any camp at one of the large marked tents, the player will need to tab over to the Upgrades screen. Once in this screen, they will be able to see all the upgrades available to them in a skill tree like progression. There are two main branches to start, Speculator Tent and Armory. It is recommended to initially upgrade the Speculator Tent, as it will give the player the opportunity to replenish their tactical items which are absolutely essential in any of the tactical engagements. Having access to free pilums that can strip shields and bandages to heal the party will be monumental in survivability and damage dealing.
The player may find that the Legion Battles are not too difficult right at the start, so it is recommended that the player go on the offensive in the early game. Prioritize the upgrades that will help facilitate this aggression. As the player grows and gains resources, they will be able to return here to upgrade their camp further. Continue from the Speculator Tent branch and go down the Bath line. This will earn players access to the Depot, which will increase the legion’s strength when conquering new regions by 10%.
Players may note that if they go down the Armory line instead there is an option to get the Depot quicker, although this one will only boost the legion strength to 5%. As the battles begin to get tighter and more difficult, the player will want to begin down that line to gain access to better walls, which will begin to prepare the player for defense.
Conquering foreign lands is the goal of any Imperator, but they must be aware of the resources available to them in order to maximize effectiveness. After a swift blitz of territory grabbing, the young commander should begin the defensive upgrades in order to keep what was gained. If the player is able to maintain this balance of attack and defense, conquest and garrison, they should have no trouble against their many foes.
